Call Tracking 101: How to attribute every inbound call to the right campaign

For many businesses, a phone call is the most valuable thing a marketing campaign can produce - and the easiest one to lose track of. Here's how call tracking fixes that.

Why calls are so hard to attribute

Online, you can follow a click from ad to landing page to form. But the moment someone picks up the phone, that trail usually goes cold. You know a call happened; you just don’t know which ad, keyword, or page sent it. That blind spot leads to budget being spent on channels that look quiet but actually drive your best leads.

It also cuts the other way: channels that generate lots of low-quality calls can look like winners until you listen to what’s actually coming in. Without attribution, you’re optimizing on incomplete data.

How call tracking works

Call tracking assigns dedicated phone numbers to your marketing sources. When a call comes in on a given number, the source is recorded automatically. Three pieces make it work:

  • Tracking numbers - each channel (paid search, social, a billboard, an email) gets its own number.
  • Dynamic number insertion (DNI) - for website traffic, a small snippet swaps the number shown based on how each visitor arrived, so a single page can attribute calls down to the keyword.
  • Attribution data - campaign, keyword, referrer, and landing page are stored alongside each call.

What to do with the data

Once calls are attributed, you can compare channels fairly, shift budget toward the ones that produce qualified calls, and sync conversions back to Google Ads so it optimizes for the right outcomes. Call recordings and summaries help you separate real leads from wrong numbers and spam.

A simple weekly habit goes a long way: review the channels driving the most qualified calls, flag the ones driving noise, and move spend accordingly. Over a few cycles, your cost per qualified call drops without any new tools.

Getting started

You don’t need a call center or a long onboarding to start. With TrackMyLeads, you add one snippet, assign your numbers, and start seeing attributed calls the same day - no spreadsheets, no guesswork.
